A Japanese Pension Fund Is Buying Crypto to Get Away From the Dollar

A Japanese pension fund is about to do something most of its peers still won't: buy crypto on purpose, and say out loud that it's hedging against the U.S. dollar.
What Happened
The Nationwide Business Corporate Pension Fund, based in Okayama and serving roughly 1,200 small and mid-sized companies, plans to allocate about 1% of its assets to cryptocurrency during fiscal year 2026. The exposure will come through a passive fund run by an unnamed major hedge fund that holds multiple crypto assets and manages around 21.3 billion yen — roughly $130 million. The fund hasn't disclosed which tokens or which manager.
The crypto slice is part of a broader currency overhaul. The fund's fiscal 2025 mix was about 80% yen, 15% dollars and 5% other currencies. For fiscal 2026 it plans to cut yen exposure to 70%, add 10% in developed-market currencies, and devote another 5% to a basket spanning emerging-market currencies, gold and crypto.
Why It Matters
The framing is what makes this notable. The fund's investment executive director reportedly said the dollar “may lose its status as a reserve currency” — which is exactly why the fund chose not to raise its dollar holdings. Instead, it pointed to Bitcoin's near-zero correlation with the dollar as a source of resilience against currency depreciation. This isn't a fund chasing returns; it's a conservative retirement pool treating Bitcoin as a macro hedge.
That logic, coming from a Japanese pension manager rather than a Silicon Valley treasury, is a meaningful signal. Japan has spent years battling a weak yen, and the willingness to diversify away from the dollar — with crypto as one of the escape hatches — mirrors a broader institutional argument that's been building all year.
What's Next
At 1% of a sub-$200-million asset base, the dollar impact on crypto markets is tiny. The precedent is not. Pension funds move in herds and study each other's allocations closely; a single fund publicly naming Bitcoin as a dollar hedge gives the next one cover to do the same. Watch whether other Japanese corporate plans follow as the country's digital-asset rules continue to firm up.
