Prediction markets just posted their biggest month on record. Kalshi and Polymarket processed roughly $45 billion in combined trading volume in June, a 75% jump from May, and the single biggest driver was exactly what you'd guess: the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What Happened
Kalshi did the heaviest lifting, growing month-over-month volume 87.4% to $31.5 billion from $16.81 billion in May. Polymarket, which handled about $7.1 billion in May, also surged as tournament trading kicked into gear.
The World Cup numbers are wild on their own. From the tournament's June 11 opener, soccer-related volume on Polymarket blew past $2 billion in just ten days — a roughly 300% jump — while Kalshi's open interest crossed $1 billion for the first time ever, up about 350% year-to-date. For scale: the World Cup winner market on Polymarket moved about $138,000 during the 2022 tournament. This cycle, champion-market volume has already smashed through $3 billion.
Why It Matters
Prediction markets have officially graduated from election-season novelty to a year-round trading venue, and the money chasing them is repricing fast. Kalshi is reportedly in talks for a new funding round at a $40 billion valuation, per the Financial Times — nearly double the $22 billion it carried just weeks earlier, and roughly triple the $15 billion rival Polymarket is said to be targeting.
For crypto specifically, Polymarket remains one of the largest consumer-facing on-chain applications in existence, and every volume record it sets is a proof point that blockchain rails can handle mainstream-scale betting flow without breaking a sweat.
What's Next
The World Cup runs deep into July, which means these platforms likely haven't peaked yet — knockout rounds historically concentrate volume into fewer, bigger markets. Watch whether Kalshi closes that $40 billion round, and whether combined monthly volume can hold anywhere near these levels once the tournament ends. If it can, the 75% June spike stops being a blip and starts being a trend. ☕₿
